Storage Insurance
Very few self-storage companies offer comprehensive content insurance
included in the rental charges. Some offer basic insurance but this
rarely covers the cost of replacing lost, damaged, or stolen items.
Usually, storage companies are able to sell you comprehensive insurance
plans through their insurance provider and some will even insist
upon it. Be sure to ask the management if this is of concern to
you.
You also may want to contact your home insurance company. Often
you can purchase a rider on your home-owners insurance policy to
insure items in storage as well as during transit to and from storage.
You may want to alter the coverage of this policy if you add or
remove items from the unit.
When considering insurance, keep in mind that you are insuring against more than just theft. Insurance can protect you against fire, floods, and accidental damage.
